Marco Simoncelli - “Another important step up”

Marco Simoncelli - “Another important step up”

The San Carlo Honda Gresini rookie achieved his best premier class qualification and equalled his best race result of the season at Phillip Island over the weekend.

Marco Simoncelli enjoyed another weekend of notable progress in his debut MotoGP campaign with a sixth-placed finish in the Iveco Australian Grand Prix. The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider started from a season’s best position of fourth on the grid for the Round 16 race, and contested for fifth place with Ben Spies for much of the 27-lap encounter.

It was Simoncelli’s third top-six result of 2010 and equalled his previous best results in Germany and Japan, whilst also signifying another stride in his development in his first season in the premier class.

“I’m very happy with this race. The rhythm I had was very pleasing and I fought with Spies on every lap, and for the first ten laps with Rossi and Hayden too, so this was very good,” said Simoncelli as he reviewed his performance.

“I am a little unhappy with the final position however because I had hoped for something better from the race. But in general I’m very pleased with my weekend. We took another important step up and I hope to continue like this until the end of the season.”

In the remaining two rounds of the campaign the Italian visits tracks he has taken victory on in the 250cc class over the past two seasons. In his title-winning 2008 season Simoncelli won at Valencia, whilst last year he took victory at Estoril.

Review the Iveco Australian Grand Prix!

Review the Iveco Australian Grand Prix!

The Iveco Australian Grand Prix rounded off an intense run of three back-to-back races in the flyaway series on the 2010 MotoGP calendar, and the Round 16 weekend kicked off with the usual pre-event activities that included the traditional visit to the Maru Wildlife Park, whilst another group of riders tried their hands at Australian Rules Football. British 125cc rider Danny Webb was also on hand to give motogp.com a guided lap of the stunning Phillip Island track.

When Friday came the weather was not on form and affected the day one schedule, with the opening sessions in all three categories pushed back due to wet conditions. When the action did get underway it was newly-crowned 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo who topped the opening MotoGP practice, in which Dani Pedrosa made his return to action after missing the two previous races with a broken collarbone. However, the pain proved too much for the recovering Repsol Honda rider and after riding in FP2 – which was led by Casey Stoner – and qualifying, Pedrosa then opted to not take part in the race. Ducati rider Stoner secured pole position as he hinted at what was to come on Sunday, but for Loris Capirossi the weekend was ended early with a crash which resulted in a groin injury.

The weather remained cold on race day morning and the MotoGP riders wrapped up warm for a parade lap prior to the start of the 125cc race, in which Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider Marc Márquez took his ninth win of the season, equalling Jorge Martínez’s 1988 record as the Spanish rider with the most 125cc wins in a single season and also delivering Derbi their first Constructors Title in 22 years.

Next up was the Moto2 race in which Alex de Angelis took his first win in the category, his second GP victory of his career having last won in the 250cc class at Valencia in 2006, and a result which he dedicated to the memory of Shoya Tomizawa.

With Stoner in pole position for the premier class race the signs were ominous for his rivals given his previous dominant form on his home track, and when the race got underway the Australian led into turn one and did not look back as he took victory by almost nine seconds ahead of Lorenzo, making it four seasons in a row that he has won at Phillip Island.

If the manner of Stoner’s win appeared comfortable the battle for the final podium position was edge-of-the-seat, with Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden fighting all the way to the final lap when an overtake from the Italian secured him third position. The results of Rossi and Lorenzo handed Fiat Yamaha the Team Title for 2010, and fifth position in the race for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Ben Spies confirmed him as the 2010 Rookie of the Year.

Despite the cold weather the Paddock Girls were ever present at Phillip Island, and the OnBoard cameras captured all the action from the bikes to provide a fantastic perspective.

Alex De Angelis dedicates victory to Tomizawa

Alex De Angelis dedicates victory to Tomizawa

The JiR Moto2 rider took his first win in the category at the Iveco Australian Grand Prix.

Alex de Angelis completed a highly productive phase of the 2010 season during the three back-to-back flyaway races in Japan, Malaysia and Australia as he achieved his first podium and then first win in the Moto2 class during the intense period.

Fourth at Motegi was followed by second at Sepang for the JiR Moto2 rider, and on Sunday at Phillip Island he registered his and the team’s first victory – from pole position – in the new intermediate class. It was the second World Championship win of his Grand Prix career and the San Marinese rider immediately made a moving dedication of his victory.

“I want to say one thing: I want to dedicate this race to Shoya Tomizawa. I think he was watching from above,” said De Angelis, who along with fellow podium finishers Scott Redding and Andrea Iannone opted not to mark their celebrations with champagne as a mark of respect. “I’m obviously very happy for how the weekend has gone. Pole position and a win in one single race are a good thing and help me re-evaluate a season that has been very difficult for me, and in this happy moment I also want to remember Shoya.”

De Angelis continued: “The weekend went well, the improvements we made in the last few races gave us hope but we know that in motor racing nothing can be sure until you get to the flag. Today is a good day, I must say thank you to the team that gave me this opportunity and prepared a very competitive package. Now I want to enjoy this moment.”

Looking ahead to the next round at Estoril, he added: “To win there will be very difficult but I’d like to continue finishing on or near the podium. It’s important for me and the team to continue working like this, and also maybe for next year.”

Casey Stoner happy to have met expectations with win

Casey Stoner happy to have met expectations with win

The Ducati rider was extremely satisfied with how his entire Iveco Australia Grand Prix went as he rounded off a strong weekend with victory in his home race for the fourth year running.

Casey Stoner’s superb form at Phillip Island continued on Sunday as the Ducati Team rider won his home GP for the fourth consecutive season.

A comfortable victory by a margin of 8.598s ahead of second-placed Jorge Lorenzo was the result of a highly productive weekend for the 25 year-old, who found the perfect level on his Desmosedici GP10 to take his third win in the last four races.

“This feels really nice. I think when I won two in a row here nobody expected me to make it three but having done that I felt there was a lot of expectation on me today,” said Stoner of his form at Phillip Island.

“To be fair we have been going for the win at the last four races - unfortunately I slipped off on the first lap at Sepang but we've made up for that this weekend. Everything has gone well for us, we have been happy with the bike from the first practice and the support from the fans has been fantastic.”

Stoner confessed to having felt slightly more tense than normal before the race due to the expectation, but he immediately settled into his rhythm and led for the entire 27 laps.

“I have to admit that before the race I was feeling the pressure, I was more nervous than I normally am but maybe I should be like that more often because I didn't make mistakes!” he said. “I am really happy with the way I rode today but every single person in the team has done a great job this weekend so my thanks go to them and I hope we can keep it going to the end of the season.”

The result lifted Stoner into third position in the Championship standings where he now sits eight points ahead of Valentino Rossi and 23 behind Dani Pedrosa with two rounds of the season remaining.

Valentino Rossi can test Ducati at Valencia

Valentino Rossi can test Ducati at Valencia

"Furusawa gave me the go-ahead to test the Ducati in Valencia" - Valentino Rossi.

Yamaha has told Valentino Rossi that he can make his Ducati MotoGP debut at the end-of-season Valencia test.

Rossi required permission from Yamaha to take part in the post-race test, since he is still under contract until the end of 2010.

Yamaha initially indicated that they might be 'unable' to let Rossi ride the Ducati before 2011 due to contractual agreements.

But since all riders - except Rossi when he left Honda in 2003 - have been released for such post-season tests, albeit in plain livery, Yamaha risked a PR disaster if it stuck to the letter of the contract.

Rossi always publically insisted that his good relationship with Yamaha would pave the way for an early contract release, and factory boss Masao Furusawa gave him the good news this weekend.

"I spoke this morning to Furusawa," GPone.com reports Rossi as telling the media in Australia, "and he gave me the go-ahead to test the Ducati in Valencia. Yamaha appreciates what I have done for them."

Rossi has taken four of his seven MotoGP world championships and 46 of his 79 race wins for Yamaha.

The Italian superstar will ride for Ducati in 2011 and 2012 - and looks certain to take crew chief Jerry Burgess and his mechanics with him.

Ben spies will replace Rossi at the factory Yamaha team, alongside 2010 world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

The 2010 Valencia season finale takes place from November 5-7.

Italian website Motosprint claims that Ducati will offer Rossi both a 'Big Bang' and 'Screamer' engine firing order to try at the test.

Jorge Lorenzo marks milestone MotoGP race with another podium

Jorge Lorenzo marks milestone MotoGP race with another podium

The Fiat Yamaha rider and 2010 World Champion finished second in the Iveco Australia Grand Prix in his 50th premier class race.

Jorge Lorenzo celebrated his 50th race in the premier class with a 32nd podium in the elite category on Sunday, finishing second in the Iveco Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

The Fiat Yamaha rider’s season has already been a huge success after he claimed the 2010 title last weekend in Malaysia, and his result in Australia combined with team-mate Valentino Rossi’s third place in the race secured the factory outfit the Team Championship as well.

The 23 year-old said: “Today we won the Teams' Title and this shows what a great season it has been for us all, with everyone working at the maximum.”

Unable to match race winner Casey Stoner’s pace Lorenzo finished comfortably ahead of team-mate Rossi by a margin of almost ten seconds, in his 14th podium finish of the year.

"We knew Casey would be hard to beat today! I tried my best, riding as hard as I could at the start and occasionally it seemed like I was closing a little bit, but then on the next lap Casey would extend his lead again by a few tenths,” said Lorenzo. “I kept trying but I didn't have much hope and half way through I decided it was better not to take risks.”

He continued: “I really enjoyed riding here and sliding a bit on my M1, it was fun but this was Casey's race today. It was good to be on the podium and now we are heading back (to Europe) and I have my first chance to go home to Mallorca as World Champion and to celebrate with my friends and family.”

With two rounds remaining Lorenzo could still achieve the highest number of points in a single season in the MotoGP class, with a potential total of 383 to be gained and Rossi’s 2008 record standing at 373.

Casey Stoner unstoppable for home Australian win

Casey Stoner unstoppable for home Australian win

Casey Stoner wins the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, third decided with last lap pass.

Casey Stoner will never be beaten as a Ducati rider at his home Australian Grand Prix, after taking his fourth Phillip Island win in a row on Sunday.

The #27, moving to Honda next year, never gave the opposition a chance as he bolted from pole to a two-second lead after just two laps.

Newly crowned world champion Jorge Lorenzo tried to provide some opposition, but Stoner always had pace in hand and went on to claim his third win of the year by a huge 8.598sec from the Fiat Yamaha rider.

The fight for third was much more lively, with Ben Spies, Nicky Hayden, Marco Simoncelli and Valentino Rossi trading places in the early stages.

Outgoing world champion Valentino Rossi, starting from his worst grid position (eighth) since 2008, didn't get the start he had hoped for and was back in ninth at the end of lap 1.

The Italian - on the podium at Phillip Island every year since 1998, including five victories in a row from 2001-2005 - then climbed up the order to catch the pack fighting for third.

Rossi wasted no time in cutting through the trio ahead of him, making shoulder contact with 2011 Ducati team-mate Hayden in the process, to reach third place by lap 8 of 27.

But Stoner and Lorenzo were long gone and Rossi instead had his hands full defending against Hayden, who was the only rider able to stick with Rossi.

The 2006 world champion outbraked the #46 to snatch third back at the Honda hairpin on lap 25, but Rossi typically clung with him and launched a block pass at the same turn to lever his M1 inside Hayden on the very final lap.

Fiat Yamaha has now won the 2010 Teams' title to add to the Riders' crown and are 39 points clear of Honda in the Constructors' standings.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Spies had briefly held second place through turn one, but lost ground after Lorenzo cut across his nose into the following left hander.

Riding at a track he made his victorious WSBK debut at in 2009, Spies spent most of the race fighting fellow rookie Marco Simoncelli for fifth position, which Spies finally took from the Gresini Honda rider with five laps to go.

Spies, who has taken two podiums this year for Monster Yamaha Tech 3, has now wrapped up the 2010 MotoGP Rookie of the Year title. Team-mate Colin Edwards was seventh, as Pramac Ducati's Aleix Espargaro, Simoncelli's team-mate Marco Melandri and Honda LCR's Randy de Puniet completed the top ten.

Mika Kallio, riding in what looks to be his last MotoGP event before being replaced by Carlos Checa for the last two rounds, was eleventh. Alvaro Bautista took twelfth at what is traditionally Suzuki's worst circuit.

No Repsol Honda rider finished the race as Andrea Dovizioso, having dropped to last place, pitted and then retired with some kind of technical problem.

Team-mate and former 2010 title contender Dani Pedrosa withdrew from the race due to a lack of strength from the collarbone he fractured in Japan on October 1.

Rizla Suzuki's Loris Capirossi was also absent after straining the Adductor muscle at the top of his left thigh when he crashed on Saturday.

Australia was the last of three flyaway events, in three consecutive weekends. The next round, the penultimate event of the year, will be held at Estoril, Portugal, on October 31.

Australian Grand Prix:

1. Stoner
2. Lorenzo
3. Rossi
4. Hayden
5. Spies
6. Simoncelli
7. Edwards
8. Espargaro
9. Melandri
10. de Puniet
11. Kallio
12. Bautista
