Toni Elias in Germany - “Two steps forward”

Toni Elías used all of his GP racing experience to mount a marvellous comeback and take victory in the Moto2 eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland on Sunday, his third win of the campaign and a result that further strengthens his grip on the Championship lead.

“The most important thing is that we improved a lot,” he said after an impressive win. “We made not just one step forward, but two I think.”

Dropping from his starting grid position on the front row to 11th at the beginning of the race Elías worked his way back up to fourth with 21 laps remaining, at which stage he was a full 7.112s off race leader Andrea Iannone.

“I had a very bad start and it was very difficult because a lot of riders made it hard for me. Anyway, after I got past many riders I saw Iannone was more or less six seconds ahead, and then I saw after every lap that the gap was a little less… that gave me the power to push,” explained Elías, who moved into third on lap nine before gradually closing the substantial gap to pass second-placed Gabor Talmacsi. Iannone was then overtaken with six laps to go.

“When I was third I caught up and finally I passed them, and what I thought was going to be the most difficult moment in the race was probably the easiest,” he said.

“I would also like to say thank you to my team, because they are working hard and pushing a lot. The situation now is perfect and victory at this track is special because it’s not one of my favourites. It’s incredible!”

Elías leads the overall standings with 136 points, ahead of Tom Lüthi (94) who crashed out of the race and Iannone (90) who placed second.

Third victory of 2010 for Elías in Germany

Toni Elías’ third win of the season came at Sachsenring on Sunday as the Gresini Racing rider triumphed in the Moto2 class at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, giving the Spaniard a further grip on the Championship lead.

An opening-lap crash involved Raffaele De Rosa (Tech 3 Racing), Héctor Faubel (Marc VDS Racing Team), Ricky Cardús (Maquinza-SAG Team), Joan Olivé (Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas) and Lukas Pesek (Matteoni CP Racing) as the tight nature of the Sachsenring track claimed the five, the first two managing to rejoin the race. Clear of the trouble at the front were Fimmco Speed Up pair Gabor Talmacsi and Andrea Iannone, with Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) chasing them in third.

Another faller came in the shape of Yuki Takahashi (Tech 3 Racing), and shortly after Simón’s participation was ended early when he slid out whilst pushing hard to keep on the tail of Talmacsi. Home rider Arne Tode (Racing Team Germany), who had qualified in second position, Alex Debón (Aeroport de Castelló-Ajo) and Sergio Gadea (Tenerife 40 Pons) also fell, with an early end to a frustrating weekend following shortly after for Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Moriwaki Racing).

With 11 laps remaining Elías was well on the way to recovering his start that had seen him drop from his starting position of third, charging up the order and through on Talmacsi – who started to drop as his tyres went off – with Simone Corsi (JiR Moto2) also passing. The Italian’s race ended on lap 20 however when he lost the front of his machine at turn 12 when in third position.

The experienced Elías was closing in all the while on race leader Iannone and six laps from the end the Championship leader made his move, taking first position. Roberto Rolfo (Italtrans STR) was passing up the order too and went through on the by now frustrated Talmacsi, who was unable to do anything.

A fantastic last-lap battle for third was played out between Rolfo and Fonsi Nieto (G22 Holiday Gym), eventually being won by the Italian, after Elías had crossed the line 3.297s clear of Iannone for his third win of the season.

Nieto took fourth, with Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) fifth and Talmacsi sixth. A fantastic ride from stand-in rider Damian Cudlin for the Tenerife 40 Pons team handed the Australian seventh.

Elías now has 136 points at the top of the standings, 42 clear of second-placed Lüthi after his DNF. Iannone moves into third, just four points off the Swiss rider thanks to his third podium of the season.

Shoya Tomizawa tops Sunday early run

The Japanese rider led a Technomag-CIP one-two with team-mate Aegerter in a wet Moto2 warm up at Sachsenring.

Shoya Tomizawa prepared himself for the round eight race at Sachsenring by setting the fastest time in the morning warm up session, with a best lap of 1’36.560 in the wet. With the track still gleaning with water from persistent rain, the Japanese rider led home a Technomag-CIP one-two in the session, with team-mate Dominique Aegerter 0.128s behind.

Xavier Simeon (Holiday Gym) and Yuki Takahashi (Tech 3 Racing) were inside the top four, with Championship leader Toni Elías (Gresini Racing) the highest placing front-row starter in fifth.

Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar), Simone Corsi (JiR Moto2) and Anthony West (MZ Racing) completed the top eight in the 20-minute run out, with pole holder Andrea Iannone (Fimmco Speed Up) placing down in 29th.

Andrea Iannone continues pole dominance

The Fimmco Speed Up rider will start a third consecutive race from pole position in the Moto2 eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, having qualified 0.673s faster than home rider Tode. Elías and Simón will complete the front row.

Andrea Iannone’s fourth pole of the season – his third in succession – was confirmed at Sachsenring on Saturday as the Fimmco Speed Up rider qualified fastest with a lap of 1’24.982, making him the only sub-1’25” rider and placing him 0.673s clear at the top of the timesheet.

The Italian, who will tomorrow go for his third win of the season, will be joined on the front row by Arne Tode (Racing Team Germany), who delighted the home crowd by qualifying in second position. Just nine-thousandths of a second behind him was Championship leader Toni Elías (Gresini Racing), who had a crash late on in the session from which he walked away uninjured. Completing the front row will be Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar), with a gap of 0.776s separating him from the pole position holder.

The second row will be comprised of Iannone’s team-mate Gabor Talmacsi, Simone Corsi (JiR Moto2), another German rider in Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) on his return from injury, and Shoya Tomizawa (Technomag-CIP).

Ricky Cardús had a crash in his first qualifying session as a new addition to the Maquinza-SAG Team, with Jules Cluzel (Forward Racing) also experiencing a fall. Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Moriwaki Racing), currently second in the Championship, qualified in 21st having had a difficult session in which he had a run off.

Third pole in a row for Iannone

Andrea Iannone will be looking to avenge his Catalunya loss after claiming his third Moto2 pole in a row, and fourth of the season, at the Sachsenring on Saturday.

The Fimmco Speedup rider had taken dominate wins from his first two poles and was on course to do the same at Catalunya, but passed under yellow flags and - having misunderstood attempts to inform him to return the position - was finally served with a ride-through penalty that dropped him to 13th.

While Iannone on pole is now a familiar sight, second place was a surprise with local star Arne Tode, who claimed the runner-up spot for racing Team Germany (Suter) despite lapping a lengthy 0.673sec slower than Iannone.

Title leader Toni Elias will start third for Gresini Moriwaki despite falling with just over one minute to go, while Aspar's Julian Simon completes the front row.

Iannone's Hungarian team-mate Gabor Talmacsi heads row two, with Friday pace setter Simone Corsi slipping to sixth for JiR.

Elias presently leads the championship by 17 points from fellow Moriwaki rider Thomas Luthi, who will start from just 21st place, while Catalunya winner Yuki Takahashi qualified 13th for tech 3.

Simon Corsi tops chaotic Moto2 session

Simone Corsi was the fastest rider in the first Moto2 practice at Sachsenring on Friday, setting a best time of 1’26.306 on his Motobi chassis of the JiR Moto2 team. That placed the Italian 0.218s clear of Gabor Talmacsi (Fimmco Speed Up) who was second.

Talmasci had led with his fourth from last lap of the session – a 1’26.524 – but six minutes before the end Corsi shot up from 16th place and into first with his effort. Alex Baldolini (Caretta Technology Race Dept) completed the top three at just under nine-hundredths behind Talmacsi.

Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) had a session which included a fall towards the end, but by then the Spaniard had set his fastest time which placed him fourth quickest. Championship leader Toni Elías (Gresini Racing) went down too, towards the start of the session, but returned to set the fifth fastest time of the hour, just over half a second off Corsi’s pace.

Alex Debón (Aeroport de Castelló-Ajo) was sixth as he avoided falling when running off during the session, with the top ten completed by Sergio Gadea (Tenerife 40 Pons), Roberto Rolfo (Italtrans STR), Shoya Tomizawa (Technomag-CIP) and Andrea Iannone (Fimmco Speed Up). Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Moriwaki Racing), currently second in the overall standings, was 15th.

Other riders who experienced crashes throughout the session were Valentin Debise (WTR San Marino Team), Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing), Yuki Takahashi (Tech3 Racing), Yonny Hernández (Blusens-STX), Kenny Noyes (Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas), Joan Olivé (Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas), Rolfo and Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda PTT Singha-SAG), and all appeared to be without serious injury as they walked away from their respective falls.

Simone Corsi leads crash-packed practice

Simone Corsi claimed the fastest lap time during a crash-packed Friday practice session for the German Moto2 Grand Prix at Sachsenring.

The JiR rider, who has taken two podiums so far this season, finished the hour 0.218sec clear of former 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi (Fimmco Speedup) with Alex Baldolini a surprise third with his ICP chassis.

Julian Simon was knocked from the top with eight minutes to go, and the Aspar rider later joined the likes of Toni Elias, Yuki Takahashi, Kenny Noyes, Joan Olive, Ratthapark Wilairot and Yonny Hernandez in hitting the deck. Simon finished the session in fourth.

Title leader Elias was one place behind his fellow Spaniard after overcoming a strange fall early in the session, where he appeared to bail off his Gresini Moriwaki before remounting and getting it back to the pits.

Elias presently leads the championship by 17 points from fellow Moriwaki rider Thomas Luthi, who was only 15th fastest on Friday.

Australian Damian Cudlin, making his Moto2 debut as a stand-in for the Pons team, was an impressive 13th fastest.

Catalunya winner Yuki Takahashi fell from his Tech 3 machine with 13 minutes to go and was left down in 24th place.
