Thomas Lüthi’s form of late in Moto2 has lifted the Swiss rider to second in the World Championship standings, and the Interwetten Moriwaki man is understandably extremely pleased with how his season has gone to date.
Four podiums from seven races, with consecutive top-three finishes in the last three rounds, have been the hallmarks of a solid campaign so far and the 23 year-old says his success has been built on a methodical approach.
“The season has felt good throughout,” Lüthi told motogp.com. “We had good tests in the winter and step by step we continued, staying calm as the season has progressed, and we’ve had a good run in these past three races finishing on the podium. Now we have to work hard to continue in that manner.”
Former 125cc World Champion Lüthi feels more than ready to challenge for a first Moto2 win, having already been within touching distance in the British GP.
“We have been close to a win at Silverstone already, where I made a mistake on the last lap,” he said. “I think we can win races and this is the first year of Moto2. It’s very special because every Friday at each GP you start from zero and have to work up. I don’t know yet, ask me after Sachsenring and I’ll be able to tell you!”
Lüthi’s recent hot run of form has been made all the more impressive by the fact he has been carrying a collarbone injury, and he even had surgery after the Assen race, the second in three back-to-back weekends.
“I’m really looking forward to a break without the bike! It was a hard time for me, spending three weekends in a row on the bike, and they were all really hard races and I had the surgery on the collarbone in the middle of it. It takes a lot of energy from the whole of your body and now I’m looking forward to having a break and taking some time to relax at home,” said Lüthi, who will benefit from a four-week break after the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland this weekend.
Finally, asked how he managed to find the strength to push through the pain and still take such strong results, Lüthi simply added: “I knew I could stay in the front group and fight for the podium, and it was all motivation!”
