As Valentino Rossi began working on his physical rehabilitation following his crash at Mugello six weeks ago which resulted in a four-race absence, Dainese were also labouring hard to design and develop a specially modified set of leathers for the 31 year-old to facilitate his return to action at this weekend’s eni Motorrad Grand prix Deutschland.
At Misano last week – the first of two private tests undertaken by the rider as he tested his comfort on a bike – Rossi tried a new set of leathers and a boot for his injured right leg, both modified to offer the best possible level of comfort and protection. Those who developed the items at D-Tec (Dainese Technology Centre) then refined and perfected them before and after the second private run at Brno on Monday in preparation for the reigning World Champion’s return at Sachsenring.
Rossi has already put into practice the D-air® Racing leathers and boot in Friday’s first practice session, with the changes focusing on the classic polypropylene protection for the tibia being replaced by Kevlar-carbon, and with the insertion of a second protector for the fibula.
The rider himself asked for these special protectors, which have also been integrated into the left leg of his leathers, and the circumference of the right leg of his suit was expanded to allow the easy pulling on of his new boot. That was expanded further today to make the injured leg more comfortable for FP1, in which Rossi was seventh fastest.
