Carlos Checa remained at the head of the timesheets following second qualification around the Nurburgring, though he heads into Superpole with Troy Corser firmly on his tail.
The Spaniard was one of a handful of riders that didn't improve upon their Q1 time, Checa's lap record-breaking effort of 1min 55.232secs proving comfortably faster than his closest rivals once again.
However, he did not top Q2, Checa managing only the seventh best lap in that session, with Corser instead coming away fastest having bettered his Q1 time by a few hundredths to 1min 55.429secs.
Noriyuki Haga lifted himself up to third position on aggregate, the Japanese rider a potential threat in Superpole should he find speed in the final sector. Indeed, last year's runner-up persistently turned the timing screens red in two of the three sectors before losing out on the final run.
Jonathan Rea was another to make a marked improvement up to fourth position, ahead of Michel Fabrizio and Shane Byrne.
Double Silverstone winner Cal Crutchlow retained a comfortable top ten position in seventh, ahead of Ruben Xaus, who made the biggest gains between sessions to go eighth, though the Spaniard did fall shortly after setting his best time.
Leon Haslam and Max Biaggi round out the top ten, the latter also taking a tumble as he failed to improve on his Q1 effort.
Outside the top ten, there were no changes in the fight for Superpole qualification, with WSBK debutant Ian Lowry making it comfortably for Kawasaki in 19th, along with Roger Lee Hayden. Fabrizio Lai and Matteo Baiocco will be forced to sit out the deciding qualifying session.
