The Spanish Moto2 rider is aiming to make his return to competitive action in Japan or Malaysia next month, having begun his physical rehabilitation.
Fonsi Nieto returned to his home in Madrid today (Tuesday) as he embarks on an intensive rehabilitation programme, following a further operation on his ankle on Sunday. Nieto is now targeting a return at either Motegi on October 3rd or Sepang on October 10th, depending on how his recovery progresses.
Nieto returned to Madrid on Sunday having been in hospital in Indianapolis since Sunday 28th August, and underwent successful surgery – performed by Doctor Ángel Villamor at the Clínica USP San José – to stabilise his injured ankle. New screws were placed in the talius bone in Nieto’s fractured left ankle to allow a proper range of movement, which will help him avoid stiffness in the joint as his recovery progresses.
After his first session of physiotherapy at the hospital on Tuesday Nieto was discharged and returned home to continue his recovery programme, which has been specially devised for him by the Advanced Recuperation Unit at the hospital.
The Holiday Gym G22 Moto2 rider also expressed his thanks to all those who sent him messages of support following his injury.
