Leon Haslam wants to give Max Biaggi 'something to think about' over the final rounds of the 2010 World Superbike Championship as he faces the first match point against him at the Nurburgring.
While Haslam inched back some of the ground to the Italian last time out at Silverstone, the 60 point deficit he faces with just six races remaining ensures he still faces an uphill battle to get on terms with his rival.
Indeed, mathematically Biaggi can win the title this weekend, though he would need to finish both races inside the top two and Haslam would require a double DNF.
Haslam is targeting quite the opposite, the Suzuki Alstare rider hoping his strong performance at the Nurburgring on the Stiggy Honda last year will see him hallenging for his first win since Kyalami this year.
“Nurburgring is a circuit I really like and I should have done better than sixth and fifth last year,” he said. “Jonathan Rea pushed me wide in the first race last year and Ben Spies ran me wide and I had to go off the track in the second race but that's racing.
“But last year on the Stiggy Honda there were some days – like Nurburgring – that things went well. I'd like to think I can now make the step up and win in Germany with the Alstare Suzuki machine.
Expressing his somewhat frustration at being unable to match Biaggi's imperious victory and finishing record this season, Haslam is nonetheless determined to keep the pressure on.
“I've managed 11 podiums this year, had just the one non finish, in America, and only really had the one bad round at Brno but it was a good round for Biaggi so it highlighted my problems even though I got two top ten finishes that day.
“I'm ready to get down to business now and I'd certainly like to add to my race wins in 2010 when we get to Germany and maybe give Max something to think about for the last couple of rounds.”
