Consistent Shane Byrne sneaks into overall top ten

Shane Byrne's 19 top ten finishes over the 2010 World Superbike season is rewarded with a tenth place finish overall.

He may have finished a race no higher than sixth during the 2010 World Superbike Championship, but late season consistency at least helped Shane Byrne snare an overall top ten finish in the overall standings.

An unlikely result for the Briton, who was overshadowed by Althea Ducati team-mate Carlos Checa, Byrne lifted himself from 12th to tenth at the final round ahead of the absent Leon Camier and Troy Corser, while he was also just 28 points from the battle for seventh.

Indeed, Byrne – who finished is campaign with a ninth and eighth place finish at Magny-Cours – was a model of consistency for almost the entirety of the season, finishing all but one race.

Furthermore, while he finished no higher than sixth in any race this year, Byrne still posted 19 top ten finishes in 26 races.

Even so, Althea Ducati has already confirmed it will not retain Byrne for the 2011 season, the former British Superbike Champion nonetheless thanking the Italian operation for its backing this year.

“In the first race I got away well but after a few corners I ran over oil and risked landing on the ground”, he said. “I lost a lot of positions but then I managed to pick up speed again to close in the top ten.

“In the second race, after a quick start, I was able to do even better. Of course I would have liked to finish my year with Althea by rewarding my team with a podium but I cannot be too disappointed because I know I gave 100 per cent. I thank the team, my technicians and our sponsors.”
